HOMOCARB® Furnace
The Lindberg HOMOCARB® furnace is an electrically heated pit style
furnace capable of temperatures up to 1750°F. The furnace is top
loading with sealed-alloy retort. Ribbon-type electric heating elements
provide high heat transfer efficiency. An internal fan provides excellent
distribution of the atmosphere gases and ensures uniform carburization.
Its peripheral speed creates a swirling action and forces the carbonaceous
atmosphere upward past the exterior of the load and then down through
the load.
A 6-inch cooling vent pipe with butterfly valve accelerates the cooling
of the load from carburizing temperature to transfer temperature. The
vent is mounted through the furnace jacket side. It allows room air to
be convected through the space between the retort and the jacket insulation.
Atmosphere is supplied to the furnace by any of three methods:
1) Use of Lindberg’s homocarb fluid. This method eliminates the
need for an external generating source. The fluid is injected onto a
furnace-heated target placed over the work load. The fluid is “cracked” into
carbon and hydrogen.
2) Atmosphere is supplied by an external endothermic generator. The endothermic
carrier gas and a hydrocarbon enricher, such as natural gas or propane,
are mixed externally at the inlet tube at the bottom of the furnace.
Then, superheated by the retort wall before entering the work load.
3) A user-supplied carburizing atmosphere, such as nitrogen-methanol
system, is delivered to the furnace via a Lindberg-supplied inlet tube.
